Olympic National Park - Day 2: Mount Storm King, Marymere Falls, Lake Crescent

The first full day at ONP, and it was a beautiful, sunny one.  Started the day off leisurely with breakfast outside at the Airbnb, and got to the Storm King ranger station around 9:45am.  The parking lot was a quarter full.

I had read wta reports that Mount Storm King was difficult at the last stretch -- that it is steep, and there are loose rocks and a rope to help out.  Despite reading this, the views looked too good to pass up, so I figured I would deal with it when I got there.

Trailhead is along the Marymere Falls trail..Ominous looking!

We didn't pass many people going up, and maybe 10 people coming down.  There were beautiful views of Lake Crescent before the last climb, and yes, the reports were spot on.  Loose rock, narrow path, and being right on the edge of the mountain.  It made me too uneasy knowing that a slip would mean falling off the mountain entirely.  We attempted a tiny portion of the path, right up until near where the rope started..but just did not want to risk falling off.  We found a rock to sit on and enjoy the view from a safe spot instead!

Beautiful Lake Crescent

It was really getting warm as we were trekking down, but we wanted to also see Marymere falls since it was a short jaunt from the Mount Storm King trailhead.  It was a nice falls -- larger than the local Coal Creek Falls.

Afterwards, we just wanted to relax and rest after the hike, so we drove next door to Lake Crescent Lodge, got some lavender lemonade, and laid on the grass under a tree.  Snacks + drinks + books + games + beautiful for three or four hours.  It was really nice to just relax and enjoy the beautiful view and day.

Relaxing and enjoying the view

Towards dinner time, we headed back towards Port Angeles and decided to stop at the street fair that was going on.  Unfortunately, it was just closing up!  Which was surprising because it was only 7pm or so.  It was a pretty small stretch of booths.

We got back to the Airbnb and made our gourmet meal for the weekend -- ramen!  Really hit the spot.  Overall, a beautiful sunny day, a rewarding hike, and leisurely relaxing made for a great first day.  Tomorrow we head towards Lake Ozette.
