Maui 2016 Day 1: Farmers Market, Olowalu Beach Park, Lahaina

Fruits!
The first day of vacation before my new job!  Ah...Woke up at 5:30am because I was not used to the time change yet.  Since we didn't have any food at the condo, we walked across the street to the Farmers Market at Maui-Honokowai.  Such a convenient location, and open Mon/Wed/Fri starting at 7am.  We figured we would get some breakfast items that would last us a couple days.

There were so many samples.  Essentially everything they sold was available to try out first.  We bought fresh fruit -- bananas, papayas, pineapple bagels, special cream cheeses.  The giant avocados were very tempting to try, but we held off.

Delicious cream cheese spreads!  The olive garlic, and sundried tomato were great. More please.

For breakfast, I stopped by the market store, which is affiliated with the farmers market, and ordered the most delicious and healthy breakfast bowl.  Acai, granola, bananas, berries, strawberries.
YUM.  Why can't this be available at home?  View from the lounge chairs at the condo.
Also next to the hotel is the Honokowai Beach park, and strip mall.  We rented snorkel fins for the week from the snorkel rental shop at the strip mall, which was super convenient.  The shop guy drew out some areas that we could snorkel at, one of them being about a 30 min drive South, past Lahaina. It was at the 14 mile marker, next to the pie shop.  We were told that the water is consistent calm here and snorkeling would be good.  Wrong!
  1. It was right off the highway and was not quite picturesque.
  2. Not clear water.
  3. Nothing to see.  I think we needed to swim out further...but it was our first time with the fancy snorkel masks, and we mainly wanted to practice and get accustomed to them.  Loved the snorkels, by the way.
Olowalu Beach Park, at milepost 14!  No fishies.
We still relaxed here for and few hours though, letting this first day be our "do nothing and have no plans" day.

It was late afternoon when we finally got lunch, going to Lahaina and trying out Local Food.  Like the majority of our destinations, it was highly reviewed on Yelp.   They were out of kahlua pork, but the chicken and lau lau were tasty!

Just a few tables outside Local Food.
Chicken was good!  And always love mac salad...
Wish I left room for their halo halo dessert.

I was stuffed.  Instead of getting back in the car and feeling lazy, walking around for a little bit around Lahaina seemed more appealing to walk off the food.  Ugh, it was difficult.  The heat, the travel, the time change, the activity from the morning...I was slogging around and so slow.  We checked out the Outlets of Maui, although I was very zombie-like the whole time.

We only stumbled about for an hour and a half tops, and decided to just head back to the condo and rest.  Dinner was going to be simple, by picking something up from the Fish Market in the strip mall across the street, and eating it at our lounge chairs by the ocean.
Fish Burrito: DELICIOUS
Poke: DELICIOUS
Fish Tacos: too dry
It was a tiring day.  I had a good night's sleep!
